03 · The Monthly Letter

Seasonal wisdom, once a month

What the season asks of us in Chinese medicine, what to cook, what we're gathering for, and the month's perks.

August 2026 letter cover

From Heart to Root

Late summer's slow turn toward center. In Chinese medicine this in-between stretch is its own season - the fifth, the hinge between them. It belongs to the Earth element, and to the Spleen and Stomach. Earth season asks for something different than Fire season did: less expansion, more digestion, literally and otherwise.

Conversations worth slowing down for

Practitioners, teachers, and friends of the community on tea, meditation, healing, and living with intention.

"Food as medicine, mindful movement, and cultural rituals as pathways to balance, nourishment, and inner clarity."
A plate of sliced pear and mushroom at a Veggie Chi dinner

Veggie Chi began in 2023 as a small table of friends eating plant-based food together, and grew into a community: suppers and tea meditations, qigong in the park, jazz nights at Spicy Moon, retreats by the water, and cooking videos in two languages.

Everything we do follows the seasons, the way Chinese medicine has for thousands of years - eat warm in the cold months, stay open in the fire of summer, come back to center as the light turns.

It is run by Kerstin, who writes the monthly letter, hosts the gatherings, and cooks most of what you see. Come hungry, leave slower.
